SKATE SHARPENING
Sharp edges are essential to skater's advancing and learning new skills. As a general rule skates should be checked at least once a month. At the higher levels sharpening is required about every 30 hours of ice time. When taking skates in for sharpening remove guards or blade covers. Tie your skates together. It’s a good idea to put your name & phone number on a piece of masking tape on the inside of both skates.

We recommend Rushton Sportec for skate sharpening of figure skates. Contact Larry Rushton at 250 756-6151. Alternative sources of skate sharpening are available at the Arena and Sports Traders in Parksville.

EQUIPMENT
Skaters should have their own equipment in order to participate in our programs. Proper ankle support and blade alignment is essential for acquiring good skating skills. Used brand name skates are often much better than new department store brand skates. Ask one of the coaches for advise before purchasing new skates.

Skates must fit like a shoe and have good support around the ankle, yet not be too tight as to restrict blood flow to the feet. DO NOT BUY SKATES WITH TOO MUCH GROWING ROOM - This causes wobbly ankles, tripping , and breaks down boot support. If toes touch the end of an unlaced skate, you should have only a finger width of room down the back of the heel.

Helmets are recommended for the Can Skate /Can Power Programs and Gloves are required for all skaters.

Wear skate guards when walking to and from the ice surface. Take off the guards at the ice surface. Do not store skates with the guards on. The blades will rust! Instead, wipe them with a clean, dry cloth, and put soft blade covers on them.

Then, enjoy the skating or the spectating.
